Spine-tingler for Friday 13th

We’re well into the officially spooky month of October, and this year it also includes an ‘unlucky for some’ Friday the 13th. Here’s a creepy poem called ‘Changeling’. (At one time, people thought that fairies stole away human babies and left behind a fae child in their place - a changeling). Imagine what it might be like to be replaced in your own home and nobody seeming to notice…

Changeling

Another me lives in my house now.

Another me gets clothed and fed.

Another me’s helped with their homework each night,

is kissed and then tucked in with Ted.

Another me blows out my candles.

Another me watches TV.

What once was my space has been filled up with them –

just who have they left me to be?

My voice is as thin as a reed now.

I fade more and more every day.

And only old Max seems to feel some unease

and whines when new me comes his way.

I tuck myself into dark corners

I hide myself under the bed

So beware if you look there for monsters –

you might see your own face instead...
